Earthquake inNepal

On 25 April, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal. This has been the worst disaster in Nepal’s recent history resulting in loss of nearly 9,000 lives. Heifer invested $ 4.15 million to support 54,547 families in 13 districts to rebuild their livelihoods and communities.

Highlights

  • Millions of people were forced to live out in the open with houses destroyed/damaged and frequent aftershocks threatening more destruction. Heifer immediately mobilized its staff to distribute temporary shelter kits to nearly 23,000 families in 13 districts, protecting them from harsh conditions.
  • Reported loss of around 17,000 large animals, 40,000 small animals and 500,000 poultry. Heifer supported 15,145 families to maintain healthy livelihoods in earthquake-impacted regions of Nepal by restoring disrupted livestock service systems and protecting valuable livestock assets for revival of rural household economic activities and market linkage.
  • $ 2.5 million supported through Self Help Group managed funds to meet victim families’ most urgent needs. Assessment of the investment pattern reveals that construction or repair of animal shed was biggest priority of victim families followed by purchase of small animals, seeds and chemical fertilizers, construction of safe shelters etc.
