Job Description

Background

Heifer Project Nepal is implementing a project “Climate Smart Dairy Farming in Nepal”. The dairy sector is a vital source of livelihoods, nutrition, and food security in Nepal. However, dairy animal farming is also one of the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which exacerbate the effects of climate change and affect the sustainability of dairy farming. The project aims to model a climate-smart dairy animal farming approach, and one of the activities is to estimate carbon sequestration potential of different common fodder tree species to recommend a net zero carbon balance dairy farming.

Heifer Project Nepal is seeking a potential consultant to help the project team in estimating carbon sequestration potential of different fodder trees and to model net zero carbon balance dairy farming.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field assessments to identify major fodder tree species.
  • Identify and critically analyze relevant scientific and technical literature, including academic journals, reports, and other relevant publications to document best practices in carbon assessment in forestry sector.
  • Estimate carbon sequestration from different fodder tree species with comparative analysis of locally applied and internationally recognized methodologies and tools, such as Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) criteria.
  • Analyze the data collected from field assessments and estimate the carbon sequestration potential of each fodder tree species.
  • Compare the total emissions of the dairy animals to determine the net amount of Carbon emissions that could be sequestered using the fodder trees.
  • Develop recommendations for Carbon offset, i.e., number of fodder trees needed in a plantation to balance GHG emissions from dairy animals.
  • Provide a draft report summarizing the methodology used, the results obtained, and the recommendations for the number of fodder trees needed.
  • Conduct validation workshop and incorporate feedbacks in the report.
  • Submit final report.

Deliverables

  • Inception report with methodology and plan of action
  • Draft report after field assessment
  • Relevant photograph
  • Final report

Duration: 2 months from signing of the contract

Key Requirements

  • Master’s degree in forestry, Botany, Environmental Science, and related subject
  • At least 5 years of experience working for carbon assessment, carbon offset, climate change, and agriculture of Nepal.
  • Solid understanding of scenario of fodder trees in Nepal, as well as their contribution to carbon sequestration
  • Be familiar with national and international standards and protocols for carbon assessment through forestry sector and apply these methodologies in estimating and reporting carbon sequestration from fodder trees.
  • Knowledge about the dairy sector practices and challenges in Nepal, particularly related to GHG emissions from livestock and climate change impacts will be preferred.
