Nepal Flood and Landslide
Relief Efforts 2014
The Impact
Following torrential rain in early August of 2014, Nepal suffered severe flood and landslides in the Tarai region, causing widespread destruction and displacement. A total of 25 districts were heavily inundated by the flood, damaging homes, roads, and farmland. According to the Home Ministry, almost 300 people lost their lives while thousands of families were displaced, forced to seek shelter in temporary camps.
Heifer supported 15,814 families for immediate relief and economic recovery with a total fund of USD 102,680, providing essential supplies, food, and resources for rebuilding livelihoods.
Our Response
- Coordination with District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) in Banke, Bardiya, Dang, Surkhet and Sindhuli for immediate relief support and participation in DDRC meeting for formulation of relief support plan.
- Assisted victim families with direct support in shelter, agriculture input, livestock sheds and vet medicines, fodder/forage and drinking water.
- Produced community based disaster risk management training manual to train project staff and Heifer’s beneficiaries on disaster preparedness and management.
